productAnatomate has developed an innovative software platform that co-ordinates the secure storage and display of patient-specific education, exercise prescription and informed consent data. The data is selected from Anatomate's large library of animations, movies, images and text files, and incorporated into specific programs targeted at particular health care practitioner groups. The platform catalogs the selected medical and surgical data in a format that allows it to be easily compiled for the needs of individual practices and patients. Patient education management and informed consent content is displayed using state of the art 3D audio-visual animations and digital printouts. The movie sequences and printout text and images are customizable for the specific needs of individual practices, doctors and patients. They can be viewed during the consultation, in the surgical practice or at the patient's home or anywhere they can access the internet.

The principle of informed constant is the most essential commercial policy that exists in contemporary surgery.  The information revolution has shifted the medical knowledge base away from the surgeon's exclusive domain, towards a more informed patient who is both more able and more inclined to take an active role in their health care decisions. The more information that a surgeon is able to provide their patient about the pros and cons of a treatment and the alternatives, the more likely the patient is going to have a positive outcome and the less likely they will be to litigate.  Multimedia presentations allow automation, improved understanding, and practice promotion via a value-added service.  In addition, the physical record of the interactions is an invaluable asset should a dispute arise.

Informed consent is a legal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon appreciation and understanding of the facts and implications of an action. In the medical industry, this means that a patient must be informed of: significant risk, or risks that would be of particular importance to that patient, such as what the procedure physically consists of; and the details of the healing process. Normally this is done with pre-surgery discussions. But, with growing constraints on the time of surgeons and procedures becoming more complicated, it is becoming increasingly difficult and onerous for the surgeon to provide the level of personalized care that they would prefer and to satisfy  the legal standards required by the law.

Advances in information technologies, such as multimedia presentations and the World Wide Web, have elevated the standard of information that patients expect and can comprehend during informed consent discussions. Furthermore, Australians and Americans are leading the world in the uptake of the new information technologies.  A supplement to the 2003 US Census, released in October 2005, revealed that 62% of US households had a computer, and 55% had internet access. These figures each increased to over 80% if you removed families earning less than US$25,000 pa.

Anatomate is harnessing this growth in technology by creating a product that works with the technological advances to serve patients in a way that they want to be served.  For instance, no one else is using 3D animations in exercise prescription and patient education software, and no-one is providing customizable solutions for each patient. Anatomate is pioneering this field.
